Integrated manufacturing of bespoke mechatronic systems
This book covers the latest advances in materials and structures in manufacturing and processing, including additive and subtractive processes. A key development incorporated within this book is 3D printing, which is being used to produce complex parts. The Self-Repairing Cities team has contributed a chapter on the integrated manufacturing of bespoke mechatronic systems.
Digitally integrated manufacturing offers the potential to create large quantities of unique devices and systems in a short period of time, through greater process robustness, flexibility, and adaptability. However, the more complex the manufacturing task, the more challenging integrated manufacturing becomes. This chapter reveals the principles of integrated manufacturing through exploring the current state of the art in automation, sensing and robotics. These principles are then extended for application to the manufacture of mechatronic systems including the potential for fabrication of bespoke devices using hybrid additive manufacturing and assembly techniques.
